HYDROCARBON-OXIDIZING BACTERIA AND THEIR POSSIBLE USE AS CONTROLLING AGENTS OF OIL POLLUTION IN THE OCEAN

Attempts were made at characterizing marine bacterial isolates on the basis of their ability to attack hydrocarbons in a complex synthetic mixture. It was seen that by balancing properly the various components, it is possible to outline the oil degradation range of the organisms. By using different nitrogen sources, both organic and inorganic, it is also possible to determine indirectly the degree of specialization and adaptation to hydrocarbon oxidation. A broad classification of hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria is discussed, and routes of attack of the various types of hydrocarbons are examined. (Author)
