SPEED BEHAVIOUR ON MOTORWAYS

THE BEHAVIOUR OF PRIVATE CAR DRIVERS WHEN CLOSE TO SPEED LIMITS AND THE INFLUENCE OF THE ROAD EFFICIENCY HAVE BEEN INVESTIGATED. FROM EARLIER SURVEYS ON FEDERAL MOTORWAYS IT COULD BE SEEN THAT THE AVERAGE SPEED HAS RISEN BETWEEN 1950 AND 1970 BY 49 KM/HOUR. THE SPEED OF SLOWER DRIVERS HAS CHANGED LESS THAN THAT OF FASTER DRIVERS. THE BEHAVIOUR BEFORE AND AFTER A SPEED LIMIT WAS SURVEYED BY BITZL ON THE SALZBURG-MUNICH MOTORWAY IN 1963 AND BY THE INSTITUTE OF TRANSPORTATION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF KARLSRUHE ON THE HEIDELBERG-KARLSRUHE MOTORWAY IN 1973, 74 AND 75. THE LIMITS AMOUNTED TO 60 KM/H ON THE FIRST LENGTH AND 100 AND 130 KM/H ON THE SECOND. THE LIMITS HAD THE RESULT OF DIMINISHING THE HAZARDOUS SHORT TIME HEADWAY. THE FALLING OFF IN PERFORMANCE ESTABLISHED IN EARLIER SURVEYS COULD NOT BE CONFIRMED WITH CERTAINTY FROM THE SURVEYS CARRIED OUT ON THE HEIDELBERG-KARLSRUHE MOTORWAY.
