THE 5500 KM TRANS-AMAZON HIGHWAY STRETCHES FROM RECIFE ON THE EAST COAST OF BRAZIL TO CRUZEIRO DO SUL ON THE FRONTIER WITH PERU. THE ROAD IS MEANT TO SERVE THE DEVELOPMENT OF MINERAL WEALTH AND POPULATION POLICY. THE GEOGRAPHICAL AND CLIMATIC CONDITIONS ARE DESCRIBED. AVERAGE ANNUAL TEMPERATURE FLUCTUATES BETWEEN 25 AND 28 DEGREES; ANNUAL RAINFALL LIES BETWEEN 1400 AND 3000 MM. THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE ROAD BEGINS WITH THE CUTTING OF A ROUTE THROUGH THE TROPICAL, VIRGIN FOREST WITH TREES UP TO 40 M HIGH. THE SWATHE IS 70 M WIDE, THE AVERAGE CLEARED STRIP 40 M, THE FORMATION 9 M, THE CARRIAGEWAY 7 M WIDE, MAXIMUM GRADIENT 9%. THE FOUNDATION CONSISTS MAINLY OF A COURSE OF CRUSHED ROCK. LATERITE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL. EXPERIENCE WITH LATERITE CONSTRUCTION METHODS FOR ROADS HAS BEEN GAINED BY THE BRAZILIAN HIGHWAY AUTHORITIES SINCE 1962. REFERENCE IS MADE TO THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE TRANS-AMAZON HIGHWAY FOR CONTINENTAL ROAD COMMUNICATIONS.
