THE BENDING TENSILE STRENGTH OF ROAD CONCRETE

THE PAPER DEALS WITH INVESTIGATIONS INTO THE MINIMUM PERIOD OF TIME AFTER WHICH NEW CONCRETE PAVEMENTS MAY BE OPENED TO TRAFFIC, WHEN THE RESISTANCE TO TENSILE BENDING STRESS HAS REACHED THE VALUE OF 34 KP/CM2. THE INVESTIGATIONS WERE PROMPTED BY THE FACT THAT EARLY FAILURE OF CONCRETE PAVEMENTS USUALLY OCCURS DUE TO EXCESSIVE TENSILE BENDING STRESSES. COMPARISON BETWEEN TEST BEAMS CAST IN THE NORMAL SLAB FORMS UNDER SITE CONDITIONS AND PLATE SPECIMENS SHOWED THAT THE LATTER HAD HIGHER SETTING TEMPERATURES, I.E. THAT THEY WERE WARMED BY HEAT OF HYDRATION. TESTS WITH DIFFERENT CURING TEMPERATURES AND WITH CEMENTS OF LOWER STANDARD STRENGTHS SHOWED CORRESPONDING INCREASES IN RESISTANCE TO TENSILE BENDING STRESS. THE RESULTING DIAGRAMS FACILITATE THE DETERMINATION OF AVERAGE TENSILE BENDING STRENGTH IN CONCRETE SLABS, AS WELL AS THE PREDICTED TENSILE BENDING STRENGTH AT A GIVEN TIME (E.G. AFTER 4 DAYS), AND ALSO THE ESTIMATION OF THE TIME REQUIRED FOR CONCRETE TO ATTAIN A SPECIFIED TENSILE BENDING STRENGTH.
