NON MASTIC-FILLED JOINTS IN CONCRETE PAVEMENTS ARE CONSTRUCTED IN THE U.S. BY PRESSING PLASTIC STRIPS INTO THE FRESH CONCRETE. IN AUSTRIA, JOINTS ARE CUT WITH A DIAMOND SAW OF 2.2 MM THICKNESS AND ARE LEFT UNFILLED. APART FROM SLIGHT SPALLING OF THE EDGES THEY APPEAR TO POSSESS NO DISADVANTAGES. ADVANTAGES ARE THE GREATER ECONOMY AND THE ENHANCED RIDING QUALITY AS COMPARED WITH MASTIC-FILLED JOINTS. FOR THIS INVESTIGATION THE PAVEMENTS WERE LAID ON CONSOLIDATED BASE-COURSES WHICH HAD BEEN IN USE AS TEMPORARY CARRIAGEWAYS FOR TWO OR THREE YEARS. IT IS TO BE EXPECTED THAT THE JOINTS WILL PROGRESSIVELY OPEN. WHEN THE PERMANENT OPENING EXCEEDS 6 MM THEY WILL HAVE TO BE FILLED WITH MASTIC. DOWEL BARS ARE PROTECTED AGAINST CORROSION BY MEANS OF PLASTIC SLEEVES.
