IMPROVED SEALANTS FOR JOINTS IN CONCRETE ROADS USING POWDERED RUBBER AND ASBESTOS FIBRE WITH REDUCED MINERAL FILLER CONTENT

THE INADEQUATE MECHANICAL STRENGTH OF JOINT SEALANTS CONSISTING ONLY OF BITUMEN AND MINERAL SUBSTANCES AS WELL AS LOW ADHESION AND INSUFFICIENT PLASTICITY CAN BE SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVED BY THE ADDITION OF DEVULCANISED RUBBER AND ASBESTOS OR SYNTHETIC FIBRES. THE INFLUENCE OF THE ADDITION OF RUBBER DEPENDS ON THE PROCESS USED FOR DEVULCANISATION. THE RESULTING IMPROVEMENT IN QUALITY ARISES FROM THE PHYSICO-MECHANICAL INTERACTION OF RUBBER AND BITUMEN. BASED ON APPROPRIATE TESTS IN THE USSR (MOTORWAY MOSCOW-GORKI) THE FOLLOWING PROPORTIONS ARE RECOMMENDED: 65-80% BITUMEN, 7-20% RUBBER, 7-15% FILLER, AND 5-10% FIBRES. THIS PRODUCES SEALANTS HAVING A SOFTENING POINT OF 54 TO 70 DEGREES AND A FRACTURE POINT BELOW 14 DEG C, WITH GOOD ADHESION TO CONCRETE AND A MELTING POINT NOT EXCEEDING 180 DEG C.
