CONCRETING EPS-FROST BLANKETS IN FROSTY CONDITIONS

THIS REPORT VERIFIES THAT EPS (EXPANDED POLYSTYRENE) CONCRETE CAN BE LAID WITHOUT DANGER AT CONSIDERABLY LOWER TEMPERATURES THAN NORMAL PAVEMENT CONCRETE. IN AN EXPERIMENT INVOLVING THE LAYING OF A 20 CM HOSTAPHOR CONCRETE ROADBASE (THE REGISTERED TRADEMARK OF THE HOECHST COMPANY) ON A 100 M LONG SECTION OF A CITY STREET IN FRANKFURT-AM-MAIN, THE CONCRETE SET IN SPITE OF THE FROZEN CONDITION OF THE SUBSOIL AND AN AIR TEMPERATURE OF -8 DEG C DURING THE NIGHT IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING ITS LAYING. THIS MAY BE EXPLAINED BY THE HIGH SETTING TEMPERATURE OF HOSTAPHOR-CONCRETE. THE FROZEN SUBSOIL WAS THAWED BY THE SLOW COOLING HYDRATION HEAT. TEMPERATURES VARYING FROM 10 TO 30 DEG C ACCORDING TO THE AGE AND TYPE OF THE SURFACE, WERE RECORDED IN THE FROST BLANKET AFTER THE FIRST FROSTY NIGHT. THE TEMPERATURE PATTERN FOR CONCRETE, AIR TEMPERATURES AND WEATHER PATTERNS ARE DESCRIBED WITH THE AID OF A DIAGRAM. BORINGS MADE AFTER 36 DAYS INDICATED STRENGTH LEVELS OF 10 TO 20 KP/CM2.
