THE RENEWING OF A MOTORWAY IN CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION AND WIDENING TO EIGHT LANES WHILST MAINTAINING TRAFFIC FLOW

ERNEUERUNG EINER BUNDESAUTOBAHN IN BETONBAUWEISE UND VERBREITERUNG AUF ACHT FAHRSTREIFEN UNTER AUFRECHTERHALTUNG DES VERKEHRS

THE CAPACITY OF THE MOTORWAY SECTION BETWEEN FRANKFURT AND DARMSTADT, CONSTRUCTED IN 1934, HAD REACHED ITS MAXIMUM LEVEL AT AN AVERAGE DAILY TRAFFIC FLOW OF 70000 VEHICLES AND WAS NOT CAPABLE OF TAKING MORE. IN RENEWING A 20 KM LONG SECTION, UNDER CONSTRUCTION SINCE 1971, THE TOTAL WIDTH WAS INCREASED FROM 23 TO 45 M WITH EIGHT TRAFFIC LANES AND TWO HARD SHOULDERS. THE TRANSVERSE SLOPE WAS INCREASED FROM 1.5 TO 2.5% AND EXTENDED OUTWARDS. TRANSITION CURVES WHICH WERE ABSENT IN THE OLD MOTORWAY, WERE INTRODUCED. THE TOTAL ESTIMATED COST AMOUNTS TO 120 MILLION DM, OF WHICH 35 MILLION DM HAS ALREADY BEEN USED FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF NARROW BRIDGES. THE EARTHWORKS AND PAVEMENT LAYING WORK WAS CARRIED OUT UNDER TRAFFIC IN THREE STAGES. A 14 KM LONG SECTION IS CONSTRUCTED IN 19 M WIDE CONCRETE SECTION. A SINGLE LAYER OF CONCRETE (BN 350) IS 22 CM THICK. THE VIBRATED TRANSVERSE JOINTS ARE PROPOSED AT 5 M SPACINGS. UNDERSIDE JOINTS ARE OMITTED. LONGITUDINAL JOINTS ARE CUT. THE CONCRETE-LAYING TRAIN WITH DOWELS AND ANCHOR PLACING EQUIPMENT, TWO CONCRETE MIXERS, TRANSVERSE ANGLED AND LONGITUDINAL SMOOTHENING SCREEDS AND SPRAYING EQUIPMENT HAVE A CAPACITY OF 550 M PER DAY. PROTECTIVE TENTS ARE NECESSARY FOR EACH 100 M.
