CALCULATING THE STRENGTHENING OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS ON THE BASIS OF MEASUREMENT OF ELASTIC DEFLECTION IN LITHUANIA

DEFLECTION MEASUREMENTS WERE CARRIED OUT WITH THE BENKELMAN BEAM ON ROLLED ASPHALT CARRIAGEWAYS WITH A TRAFFIC LOAD OF 1500 TO 2800 LORRIES PER 24 HOURS, 30% TO 50% OF THE LATTER HAVING A 3.5 TO 5.0 T LOAD. MEASUREMENTS WERE THEN TAKEN OF CALCULATED ELASTIC DEFLECTION SIZES AND EQUIVALENT SURFACING THICKNESSES IN THE MULTICOURSE SYSTEM USED. THE PAPER TOOK AS ITS BASIS SIMILAR SUBGRADES HAVING THE LOWEST CALCULATED ELASTICITY MODULUS E INDEX 0 = 240 KP/SQ CM AND INTRODUCED CORRESPONDING SUBSTITUTE COARSE AGGREGATE LAYER THICKNESSES FOR THIS PURPOSE. BY MEANS OF EXAMPLES AND DIAGRAMS THE STRENGTHENING LAYER NECESSARY FOR EXISTING CARRIAGEWAYS IS DETERMINED IN RELATION TO ADMISSIBLE DEFLECTION AND CALCULATED DEFORMATION. IT IS ESSENTIAL TO CARRY OUT MEASUREMENTS OF ELASTIC DEFORMATION WITH BENKELMAN BEAMS IN ORDER TO CLARIFY THE RELATIONS BETWEEN ELASTIC DEFLECTION VALUES AND TIME-RELATED CHANGES IN BEARING CAPACITY AND ROAD STRUCTURES.
