APART FROM STRONGER GRAVELS, TOUGHER MORTARS MAY BE USED TO INCREASE THE MECHANICAL STRENGTH OF ASPHALTIC SURFACINGS, THESE MORTARS BEING OBTAINED BY THE ADMIXTURE OF ASBESTOS. A PROGRAMME OF RESEARCH AIMING TO INCREASE KNOWLEDGE ON ASBESTOS WAS ARRANGED, IN 5 PARTS, THE FIRST OF WHICH WAS REPORTED IN IRRD RESEARCH PROJECT NO. 700179. VARIOUS TYPES OF ASBESTOS, CHARACTERISED BY ACID RESISTANCE AND BULK DENSITY, FIBRE LENGTH DISTRIBUTION AND SPECIFIC SURFACE, AND RIDGEN POROSITY, PARAFFIN OIL ADSORPTION AND SETTLEMENT VOLUME, ARE TO BE MIXED WITH BITUMEN IN THE SECOND STAGE OF THE WORK AND EXAMINED FOR THEIR RHEOLOGICAL PROPERTIES AND FRACTURE BEHAVIOUR.
