INFLUENCE OF PARTICLE SIZING, TYPE OF STONE AND QUANTITY OF FILLERS ON THE DURABILITY OF GUSSASPHALT SURFACINGS

THE OBJECT OF THE WORK IS TO DETERMINE THE EXTENT TO WHICH THE STABILITY OF A GUSSASPHALT SURFACING IS CHANGED BY THE USE OF VARIOUSLY STRUCTURED FILLERS. TEST METHODS ARE TO BE CITED, BY MEANS OF WHICH THE FILLERS CAN BE GRADED WITH RESPECT TO THEIR STIFFENING ACTION. FILLERS USED IN ASPHALTIC CONCRETE SURFACINGS, STUDIED IN PREVIOUS RESEARCH, ARE TO BE INCORPORATED INTO GUSSASPHALT MIXTURES. THE PROPORTION OF FILLER IN GUSSASPHALT IS APPROXIMATELY TWO AND A HALF TIMES AS GREAT AS THAT IN ASPHALTIC CONCRETE. THE FILLERS TO BE USED ORIGINATE FROM 5 DIFFERENT TYPES OF ROCK; THEY ARE CLASSIFIED INTO FINE-GRAINED, MEDIUM-GRAINED AND COARSE-GRAINED GROUPS, MAKING 15 DIFFERENT TYPES OF FILLER IN ALL. THE EFFECT OF THE FILLERS ON THE DURABILITY OF GUSSASPHALT SURFACINGS UNDER STATIC AND DYNAMIC LOADING IS TO BE EXAMINED. MEASUREMENTS OF STIFFNESS ARE BEING MADE IN PRELIMINARY STUDIES ON THE BITUMINOUS MORTAR (0/2 MM) OF THE GUSSASPHALT WITH THE ROTARY VISCOMETER. IN THE MORTAR, THE STIFFNESS, WETTING AND OTHER PHYSICO-CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF THE VARIOUS FILLERS IN CONTACT WITH BITUMEN 45 CAN BE MEASURED MORE EASILY THAN IN THE GUSSASPHALT MIXTURE.
