RIGID PAVEMENTS IN SPAIN

LES ROUTES EN BETON DE CIMENT EN ESPAGNE

THIS ARTICLE DESCRIBES THE DEVELOPMENT OF RIGID PAVEMENT CONSTRUCTION FROM 1960-1975, AS PART OF THE EFFORT MADE TO RENOVATE THE ROAD NETWORK IN SPAIN. THE IMPORTANCE GIVEN TO RIGID PAVEMENT IS ATTRIBUTED (1) TO THE DIFFICULT IN-SERVICE CONDITIONS RELATED TO THE GEOGRAPHY AND CLIMATE OF THE COUNTRY AND (2) TO ECONOMIC CONSIDERATIONS. THE EXTENSION OF RIGID PAVEMENT CONSTRUCTION IN SPAIN IS PREDICTED. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE SPECIFICATIONS AND CONSTRUCTION METHODS USED FOR SEVERAL ROADS AND MOTORWAYS. COMMENTS ARE MADE ON LESSONS DRAWN FROM THE EXPERIENCE ACQUIRED ON EXPERIMENTAL SECTIONS: THICKNESS AND LENGTH OF SLABS, OPERATION OF JOINTS, BEHAVIOUR OF CONTINUOUSLY REINFORCED CONCRETE, COMPARISON OF THE 3 PRESTRESSING SYSTEMS (EXTERNAL BY MEANS OF HYDRAULIC JACKS OR PNEUMATIC JOINTS, INTERNAL BY MEANS OF CABLES), DEVELOPMENT OF A SATISFACTORY SYSTEM OF PNEUMATIC JOINTS, DEVELOPMENT OF FLEXIBLE EPOXY RESIN FORMULAE FOR THE SEALING OF CRACKS AND REPAIR OF SLAB EDGES.
