THE USE OF A LIGHTWEIGHT PERCUSSIVE BORING RIG IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION
UTILISATION EN CONSTRUCTION ROUTIERE DE LA SONDE DE BATTAGE LEGERE CRR
INVESTIGATIONS CARRIED OUT AT THE CENTRE DE RECHERCHES ROUTIERS (CRR) INTO THE POSSIBILITY OF USING A LIGHTWEIGHT PERCUSSIVE BORING RIG IN HIGHWAY GEOTECHNICS LED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE CRR BORING DEVICE. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE PRINCIPLES OF EXPLORATORY BORING AND OF THE CRR PROTOTYPE. SOME APPLICATIONS OF THE DEVICE TO VARIOUS CASES ARE REVIEWED. EXAMPLES SHOW THE APTITUDE OF THE CRR BORING RIG TO DETECT VARIATIONS IN THE CHARACTERISTICS INFLUENCING THE MECHANICAL STRENGTH OF SOIL AND TO MAKE A QUANTITATIVE EVALUATION OF SOME OF THE PARAMETERS AFFECTING THE BEARING CAPACITY.
