INVESTIGATION INTO AUTOMATIC SURVEY OF VEHICLE TYPES

UNTERSUCHUNGEN ZUR AUTOMATISCHEN ERMITTLUNG VON FAHRZEUGARTEN

THIS PAPER DEALS WITH POSSIBLE WAYS OF CLASSIFYING GOODS VEHICLES ACCORDING TO TWO VEHICLE TYPES AND PLACING EACH VEHICLE INTO VEHICLE-TYPE GROUPS. THE AUSTRIAN PRODUCERS OF THE MEASURING AND COUNTING EQUIPMENT ALSO OFFER SYSTEMS FOR DIFFERENTIATING VEHICLE TYPES. THE METHOD BY WHICH THE SYSTEM OPERATES HAS BEEN STUDIED AND THE ACCURACY OF THE AUTOMATIC DIFFERENTIATION EQUIPMENT QUANTIFIED. FROM THE NUMBER OF RELEVANT POSSIBLE DIFFERENTIATION METHODS FOR PLANNING AND OPERATION USE, TWO WERE SELECTED, TO BE ADOPTED FOR THE DIFFERENTIATION CRITERIA ESTABLISHED. THE VEHICLE HEIGHT SERVES AS THE FIRST OBJECTIVE CRITERION FOR DIFFERENTIATION, WHICH SHOWS IN FACT THAT ALL VEHICLE GROUPS EXCEPT MOTOR CARS CAN BE GROUPED TOGETHER IN A "GOODS AND SIMILAR VEHICLES" CATEGORY. THE SECOND QUALITATIVE CRITERION CONSIDERS THE FUNCTIONAL BEHAVIOUR OF THE VEHICLES AND LEADS TO DIVISION INTO A GROUP OF PRIVATE CARS AND LIGHT DELIVERY VEHICLES AND A SECOND GROUP MADE UP OF FAST TRANSPORTERS, SMALL GOODS AND OTHER GOODS VEHICLES. BOTH AUTOMATIC DIFFERENTIATING SYSTEMS UNDER INVESTIGATION ARE BASED ON THE SAME MEASURING PRINCIPLE - A VEHICLE LENGTH MEASUREMENT USING INDUCTION LOOPS. SINCE THE RANGES OF LENGTHS COVERING HEAVY PRIVATE VEHICLES AND LIGHT DELIVERY VEHICLES LAP, SMALLER ERRORS WERE EXPERIENCED USING AUTOMATIC DIFFERENTIATION BY THE QUALITATIVE CRITERION. USING EITHER SYSTEM OF DIFFERENTIATION, THE GRADING ERRORS DID NOT SIGNIFICANTLY GO BEYOND THE RANGE OF COUNTING ERRORS ASSOCIATED WITH SIMPLE GOODS VEHICLE SURVEYS.
