SLURRY TRENCH WALLS, PILE WALLS, TRENCH BRACING

THIS GENERAL REPORT DEALS WITH THE FOLLOWING: THE STABILITY ANALYSIS OF A TRENCH IN SOFT CLAY, THE EFFECTS OF THE BENTONITE SUSPENSION ON SKIN FRICTION AND BEARING CAPACITY OF DIAPHRAGM WALLS, THE EFFECT OF THE TIME OF CONTACT OF THE SUSPENSION WITH THE SOIL ON THE THICKNESS AND STRENGTH OF THE FILTER LAYER AND ON SETTLEMENTS. FIELD TESTS WERE CARRIED OUT TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM AND TO DETERMINE THE MAGNITUDE OF FRICTION FORCES AND THE DISPLACEMENTS NECESSARY FOR THEIR MOBILISATION. THEN FOLLOW DESCRIPTIONS OF ACTUAL PROJECTS, NAMELY A COMBINED BUILDING FOUNDATION (DIAPHRAGM WALLS AND BORED PILES) AND THE NEW DOCK FACILITIES IN THE PORT OF BRISTOL (DIAPHRAGM WALLS IN SOFT CLAY). EXAMPLES ARE GIVEN OF PRESTRESSED DIAPHRAGM WALLS IN BOTH PRECAST AND IN-SITU CONCRETE. SAFETY MEASURES ARE PRESENTED FOR THE CASE OF A DEEP EXCAVATION WHERE PERMANENT INTERFERENCE WITH THE GROUND WATER CONDITIONS WAS NOT PERMITTED. THE USE OF BENTONITE TRENCHES OR BENTONITE-SOIL MIXTURES FOR SEALING OFF GROUND WATER ARE DESCRIBED. THE PERMEABILITY, THE DANGER OF WASHING OUT THE BENTONITE AND OF THE FORMATION OF HORIZONTAL CRACKS RESULTING FROM SETTLEMENT WERE INVESTIGATED. FURTHER TOPICS WERE: SAFETY PRECAUTIONS FOR ST STEPHEN'S CATHEDRAL DURING THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE UNDERGROUND RAILWAY IN VIENNA, THEORETICAL INVESTIGATION OF AN ANCHORED SHEET PILE WALL IN SOIL WITH NON-LINEAR ELASTIC PROPERTIES, DEFINITION OF SAFETY FOR MULTIPLE ANCHOR WALLS, LARGE SCALE TESTS TO MEASURE THE REDISTRIBUTION OF LOADS FOLLOWING THE FAILURE OF INDIVIDUAL ANCHORS, COMPREHENSIVE MEASUREMENTS IN THE CASE OF A DEEP EXCAVATION IN CLAY WITH PRE-DRIVEN SUPPORT AND RESEARCH INTO THE PROBLEM OF THE EARTH PRESSURE AT REST AND ITS DEPENDENCE ON VARIOUS SOIL PARAMETERS.
