INVESTIGATIONS ON THE PERMISSIBLE DEPTH OF EXCAVATIONS IN STIFF PLASTIC CLAY

UNTERSUCHUNGEN UEBER DIE ZULAESSIGE AUSHUBTIEFE VON BAUGRUBEN IM STEIFPLASTISCHEN TON

THE HEAVE OF THE EXCAVATION BOTTOM IN AN EXCAVATION OF 70 M BY 70 M BY 25 M DEEP WAS OBSERVED AT VARIOUS DEPTHS FROM THE TIME OF COMMENCEMENT OF THE EXCAVATION WORKS ONWARDS. AT THE FINAL STAGE OF EXCAVATION THE HEAVE WAS 12 CM. THE PROGRESSIVE DEVELOPMENT OF THE HEAVE PROVIDED AN OPPORTUNITY OF INVESTIGATING THE PERMISSIBLE DEPTH OF EXCAVATION. THE INVESTIGATION WAS CARRIED OUT WITH THE AID OF THE FINITE-ELEMENT METHOD. THE FINITE-ELEMENT PROGRAM TOOK ACCOUNT NOT ONLY OF THE NON-LINEAR STRESS/STRAIN RELATIONSHIP, BUT ALSO THE DIFFERENT DEFORMATION BEHAVIOUR UNDER DIFFERENT CONDITIONS OF STRESS. THE PARAMETERS OF THE NON-LINEAR STRESS/STRAIN RELATIONSHIP WERE DETERMINED FROM TRIAXIAL TESTS. THE INVESTIGATIONS HAVE SHOWN THAT WITH INCREASING EXCAVATION DEPTH A PROGRESSIVELY DEEPER FAILURE ZONE IS FORMED. THE GROWTH OF THE FAILURE ZONE CAN BE LIMITED BY INCREASING THE DEPTH OF THE SHEETING AROUND THE EXCAVATION. UP TO THE INVESTIGATED DEPTH, AT LEAST, THE EXCAVATION DEPTH IN STIFF CLAY IS NOT LIMITED BY THE FAILURE ZONE. THIS APPLIES ONLY TO STRUTTED SIDE WALLS, NOT TO ANCHORED WALLS OR SHEETING.
