IMPROVEMENT OF THE STABILITY OF AN EMBANKMENT BY PILING AND REINFORCED EARTH

THE SUBSTRUCTURE CONDITIONS OF MOTORWAY EMBANKMENTS AND RAILWAY APPROACH BRIDGES ARE OFTEN PARTICULARLY BAD AND CAN CAUSE PROBLEMS RELATED TO STABILITY AND SINKING. IN SWEDEN THE SOLUTION WAS FOUND OF BASING FOUNDATIONS FOR APPROACH RAMPS FOR BRIDGES ON PILES. THE FIRST SERIES WERE ARRANGED IN A GRADIENT SO AS TO ABSORB THE HORIZONTAL FORCES OF THE SLOPE. HOWEVER, SERIOUS PROBLEMS SUCH AS EXTENSIVE VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL MOVEMENTS AND PORE WATER PRESSURE CAN ARISE DURING THE DRIVING OF PILES IN CLAY SLOPES. EMBANKMENT LOADS CAUSE BENDING STRESS IN THE PILES WHICH RESULTS IN REDUCED BEARING CAPACITY AND INCREASED SETTLEMENTS. THESE MOVEMENTS WERE REDUCED BY THE EXTRACTION OF LONG CLAY PLUGS BUT THIS ALSO RESULTED IN A DECREASE IN SHEARING STRENGTH. AS ONLY VERTICAL PILES COULD BE CONSTRUCTED DUE TO THE STEEP FALL OF THE ROCK, THE EMBANKMENT WAS REINFORCED WITH POLYESTER TO REDUCE THE HORIZONTAL STRESS CAUSED BY FILL MATERIAL ON THE PILES. MEASUREMENTS INDICATE THAT BOTH HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL DEFORMATIONS CAN BE MINIMIZED. THE COVERING ABSTRACT FOR THE CONFERENCE IS IRRD NO 306088.
