STABILITY OF EXCAVATIONS IMPROVED BY SALT DIFFUSION FROM DEEP WELLS
SOFT, SENSITIVE, MARINE CLAY OFTEN GIVES RISE TO STABILITY PROBLEMS WHEN EXCAVATION IS CARRIED OUT. THIS ARTICLE DESCRIBES A PROJECT WHERE THE STABILITY PROBLEM WAS SOLVED BY IMPROVING THE SHEAR STRENGTH OF THE CLAY WITH THE AID OF CHEMICAL TREATMENT, WITHOUT DISTURBING THE NATURAL STRATIFICATION OF THE CLAY. THIS WAS ACHIEVED BY MEANS OF THE DIFFUSION OF CALCIUM CHLORIDE FROM DEEP SALT WELLS. THE PROJECT WAS VERY SUCCESSFUL; A MEAN SHEAR STRENGTH IMPROVEMENT OF 50% WAS ACHIEVED AFTER ONE YEAR AND ALMOST 200% AFTER THREE YEARS. THE STRENGTH CONTINUES TO RISE.
