CALCULATION OF STABILITY OF SLOPES

IN CALCULATING THE STABILITY OF SLOPES ON THE BASIS OF THE HYPOTHESIS OF ADMISSIBLE SHEARING STRENGTH PUT FORWARD BY JELLENIUS, ONE OBTAINS A STRAIGHT LINE INTERSECTING THE STRAIGHT LINE OF THE RESIDUAL SHEARING STRENGTH. SHOULD THE NORMAL STRESS LEVEL LIE BELOW THIS POINT THE RESULTANT ADMISSIBLE SHEARING STRESS WILL BE GREATER THAN THE RESIDUAL SHEARING STRENGTH. SHOULD THE NORMAL STRESS LEVEL BE ABOVE THIS POINT THE RESULTANT ADMISSIBLE SHEARING STRESS WILL BE LOWER THAN THE RESIDUAL STRENGTH. THE AUTHOR THEREFORE SUGGESTS CALCULATIONS BASED ON REDUCED COHESION C/F (F-SAFETY FACTOR) AND THE RESIDUAL SHEARING ANGLE. WHEN CALCULATING THE STABILITY OF A SLOPE THE AUTHOR DIVIDES THE SLIP SURFACE INTO THE FOLLOWING TWO SECTIONS: (1) AN ACTIVE SECTION WHERE THE SHEARING STRESS IS HIGHER THAN THE RESIDUAL SHEARING STRENGTH; (2) A PASSIVE SECTION WHERE THE SHEARING STRESS IS LOWER THAN THE PEAK SHEARING STRENGTH. IN THE ACTIVE SECTION OF THE SLIP SURFACE CALCULATIONS ARE MADE ON THE BASIS OF PEAK SHEARING STRENGTH. CALCULATIONS OF STABILITY ARE BASED ON THE SAFETY LEVEL WITH F = 1.
