FINAL EVALUATION OF COLD MIX SURFACING PROCEDURES

THE OBJECTIVES WERE TO: (1) DETERMINE WHAT TYPES OR GRADES OF BITUMENS CAN BE MIXED COLD THROUGH A STABILIZATION PLANT AND STOCKPILED FOR LATER USE; (2) DETERMINE WHAT TYPE OR GRADE OF BITUMEN IN A MIXTURE CAN BE EFFECTIVELY HANDLED ON THE ROADWAY WITH GRADERS; (3) DETERMINE THE QUANTITY OF MATERIAL THAT CAN BE MOST EFFECTIVELY PLACED WITH REGARD TO EQUIPMENT AND QUANTITY OF MATERIAL NEEDED TO PROPERLY SMOOTH A LOW CLASS TYPE PAVED ROAD; (4) DETERMINE THE TOTAL COST PER CUBIC YARD OF MIXTURE WHEN COMPARED TO A CUBIC YARD WHEN MIXED ON THE ROADWAY IN THE CONVENTIONAL MANNER WITH GRADERS; AND (5) DETERMINE IF IT IS NECESSARY TO "TASK" AN EXISTING ROAD PRIOR TO PLACING PREMIXED MATERIAL. ESSENTIALLY THIS REPORT IS A REEVALUATION OF THE 3RD PART --- AN EVALUATION OF MIXTURES AND THEIR PERFORMANCE. THE RESULTS FOR APPLICATION RATES FOR CUBIC YARDS PER MILE SHOW THAT (1) 120 PLUS OR MINUS IS THE MINIMUM QUANTITY THAT SHOULD BE CONSIDERED; (2) 140 PLUS OR MINUS IS THE MINIMUM QUANTITY THAT CAN BE PLACED USING PREMIXED MATERIAL; (3) 200 PLUS OR MINUS IS THE QUANTITY THAT PROVIDES SUFFICIENT COVER FOR A HIGHWAY IN FAIR TO GOOD CONDITION; (4) 220-250 PLUS OR MINUS IS THE PRACTICAL ONE AS FAR AS RIDEABILITY AND COST ARE CONCERNED; (5) 280 PLUS OR MINUS IS SUFFICIENT TO CORRECT BADLY CROWNED ROADS, ALTHOUGH LACK OF AERATION MAY BE A PROBLEM; AND (6) 340 PLUS OR MINUS IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE LACK OF AERATION. WHAT GRADATION OF AGGREGATE IS USED WILL DEPEND ON THE APPLICATION RATE, FOR INSTANCE FINER MIXTURES SHOULD BE USED FOR THIN APPLICATIONS. ALSO, THE APPLICATION RATE AFFECTS THE GRADES OF BITUMEN THAT CAN BE ADEQUATELY HANDLED. "TACK" COATS ARE APPROPRIATE FOR IRREGULAR SHAPED ROADWAYS WHEN A THIN MIXTURE IS TO BE APPLIED. HOWEVER, BASED IN PART UPON THE RESULTS IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THE EFFECTIVENESS OF MIXING A MULCH ON THE ROAD IS NOT ONLY NOT EFFECTIVE FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME, BUT HAS CAUSED SERIOUS DAMAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF CARS AFTER THEY WERE COATED WITH WET ASPHALT.
