EVALUATION OF SELECTED DUST PALLIATIVES ON SECONDARY HIGHWAYS
DUST PALLIATIVES EVALUATED WERE CALCIUM CHLORIDE, SODIUM CHLORIDE, COMBINATION OF THESE TWO CHLORIEDES, EMULSIFIED ASPHALT, AND CALCIUM LIGNOSULFONATE. EACH PALLIATIVE WAS EVALUATED ON FULL-SCALE TEST SECTIONS WITH RESPECT TO EASE OF APPLICATION AND MAINTENANCE, DURABILITY AND LIFE, COST AND PERFORMANCE, AND DUST CONTROL ON A SUBJECTIVE RATING SCALE. THE EVALUATION INDICATED THAT CALCIUM CHLORIDE PROVIDED THE MOST SATISFACTORY COMBINATION OF EASE OF APPLICATION, DURABILITY, COST, AND DUST CONTROL BUT CAN NOT BE RELIED UPON TO PROVIDE SUFFICIENT RETENTION FOR DUST CONTROL IN A SECOND YEAR.
