NOISE LEVELS ASSOCIATED WITH PLANT MIX SEALS
FIELD TESTING WAS PERFORMED ON COLORADO HIGHWAYS ON OPEN GRADED PLANT MIX SEALS, DENSE GRADED BITUMINOUS PAVEMENT, AND PORTLAND CEMENT CONCRETE. THE DATA DEVELOPED BY THESE TESTS SHOW THAT A MOTOR VEHICLE TRAVELING AT 45 MPH PRODUCES LESS NOISE ON OPEN GRADED PLANT MIX SEAL COATS, AS A GROUP, THAN ON OTHER TYPES OF PAVEMENT. TRAFFIC NOISE MEASURED AT 25 FEET FROM THE MOVING VEHICLE IS SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER FOR THE MORE OPEN GRADED COLORADO "TYPE A" THAN FOR ANY OTHER PAVEMENT TESTED.
