BRIDGE DECK RESTORATION METHODS AND PROCEDURES, PART II, BRIDGE DECK SEALS
SALTING TO PREVENT FROSTING IN VALLEY AREAS OR ICE IN MOUNTAIN AREAS IS CAUSING PREMATURE DECK DETERIORATION IN CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY STRUCTURES. AS A PREVENTIVE MEASURE IT IS DESIRABLE TO SEAL BRIDGE DECKS IN THESE TROUBLESOME AREAS WITH AN IMPERVIOUS MEMBRANE. ACCORDINGLY, FIELD RESEARCH IS UNDERWAY TO INVESTIGATE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF BRIDGE DECK SEALANTS. THIS REPORT COVERS: (1) INITIAL OBSERVATIONS ON 13 EXPERIMENTAL SEALING SYSTEMS, INCLUDING SOME CONSTRUCTION PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED DURING THEIR PLACEMENT; (2) FINAL EVALUATION OF 2 SEALING SYSTEMS; (3) REQUIRED PROPERTIES FOR EFFECTIVE SEALANTS; (4) EFFECT OF SURFACE PREPARATION ON BOND; AND (5) PROBLEMS WITH HAND DISTRIBUTION OF SURFACE TEXTURING AGGREGATE. /FHWA/
