FULL-SCALE FIELD TRIALS OF NEW ROAD SURFACINGS
THE AUTHOR JUSTIFIES THE NEED FOR AND DISCUSSES THE ADVANTAGES OF FULL-SCALE TRIALS TO ASSESS THE PERFORMANCE OF NEW ROAD SURFACINGS AS REGARDS SKIDDING RESISTANCE. THE DESIGN OF A FIELD TRIAL IS OUTLINED AND SOME EXAMPLES OF FIELD TRIALS ARE QUOTED: (1) NEAR SALFORD, WHERE AN ARTIFICIAL AGGREGATE DERIVED FROM GLASS WAS USED, (2) IN DERBYSHIRE, WHERE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF GRITSTONE AND LIMESTONE WERE COMPARED; (3) IN CHESHIRE WHERE A PULVERISED FUEL ASH WAS USED; AND (4) IN WAKEFIELD, WHERE A CONCRETE REINFORCED WITH VARIOUS TYPES AND QUANTITIES OF METALLIC AND NON-METALLIC FIBER WAS USED. COMMENTS ARE GIVEN ON THE APPLICATION OF THE TEST RESULTS. /TRRL/
