THE DEVELOPMENT AND TESTING OF ARTIFICIAL GRITTY AGGREGATES
THIS PAPER DESCRIBES RESEARCH INTO THE POSSIBILITY OF PRODUCING SYNTHETIC AGGREGATES OF GRITTY AND POROUS STRUCTURE. THE REQUIREMENTS OF HIGH QUALITY ROAD-SURFACING AGGREGATES AND LABORATORY TESTING METHODS ARE SUMMERIZED, AND THE EFFECT OF GRITTY STRUCTURE AND POROSITY ON THE POLISHING RESISTANCE OF BOTH NATURAL AGGREGATES AND SYNTHETIC AGGREGATES IS DESCRIBED. IN ADDITION, DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE EFFECT OF THE MATRIX ON THE POLISHING RESISTANCE OF GRITTY AND POROUS SYNTHETIC AGGREGATES. THE MATRICES CONSIDERED INCLUDE FUSED IGNEOUS ROCKS, HYDRAULIC CEMENTS, BLAST FURNACE SLAGS AND CERAMICS. THE RESULTS OF WORK ON THESE MATRICES AT THE ROAD RESEARCH LABORATORY AND BY THE AUTHOR ARE DISCUSSED. /TRRL/
