PLANT FOR THE REDUCTION OF THE EVAPORATIVE PETROL EMISSION OF PRIVATE CARS
ANLAGEN ZUR HERABSETZUNG DER BENZIN-VERDUNSTUNGS-EMISSION AN PERSONENWAGEN
ON CARS WITH CARBURETTOR FED MOTORS THERE ARE NORMALLY TWO PARTS OF THE PETROL CIRCUIT WITH OPENINGS TO THE ATMOSPHERE: THE PETROL TANK AND THE CARBURETTOR FLOAT CHAMBER. MEASUREMENTS HAVE SHOWN THAT FOR VEHICLES IN THE SUN WITH ENGINES AT SERVICE TEMPERATURES THE CARBURETTOR FLOAT CHAMBER TEMPERATURE IS AFFECTED MAINLY BY THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT TEMPERATURE WHEREAS THE PETROL TANK IS AFFECTED MAINLY BY THE OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE. IF THE TANK IS BENEATH THE BOOT THEN ITS TEMPERATURE WILL RISE IN EXCESS OF THE OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE. IN THIS TEST PROGRAMME THE EVAPORATION TESTS USED IN THE USA, JAPAN AND AUSTRALIA ARE ALSO DISCUSSED. IN ORDER TO REDUCE EVAPORATION SPECIAL CARS WERE DEVELOPED. TWO MAIN SYSTEMS HAVE BECOME PREVALENT: CRANKCASE CHAMBER RESERVOIR SYSTEMS AND ACTIVATED CARBON RESERVOIR SYSTEMS. AS REGARDS FACTORS INFLUENCING THE RATE OF EVAPORATION IT HAS BEEN SHOWN THAT THE RATE INCREASES WITH INCREASING TEMPERATURE AND DECREASING EXTERNAL PRESSURE. AS WELL AS THIS, THE RATE OF EVAPORATION INCREASES WITH THE INCREASE IN SURFACE AREA OF THE FLUID AND WITH THE INCREASING VELOCITY OF THE AIR AT THE LIQUID SURFACE. THIS MEANS THAT THE CLIMATE HAS A GREAT EFFECT ON THE TOTAL LOSSES. FURTHERMORE, THE TRAFFIC CONDITIONS, FACTORS OF INDIVIDUAL VEHICLE CONSTRUCTION AND THE PETROL COMPOSITION ARE ALSO INFLUENCING FACTORS. MEASUREMENTS OF EVAPORATION LOSSES DURING THE FILLING OF PETROL TANKS OF MOTOR VEHICLES HAVE SHOWN THAT, FOR EXAMPLE, FOR AN ASSUMED MILEAGE OF 10000 KM/YEAR, WITH AN AVERAGE FUEL CONSUMPTION OF 15 L PER 100 KM (I.E. AN ANNUAL CONSUMPTION OF 1500 L), WE HAVE A LOSS OF 1.52 KG PER YEAR FOR THE TANK OF A VEHICLE WITH A 2.8 LITRE 6 CYLINDER ENGINE.
