STUDY OF THE LOADING OF COMMERCIAL VEHICLE SEATS DURING REAR-END COLLISIONS

FOR EVALUATING THE QUALITY AND MOUNTING OF SEATS IN LORRIES AND BUSES TEST SPECIFICATIONS ARE USED WHICH WERE DEVELOPED FOR PASSENGER CARS. THE OBJECT OF THE STUDY WAS TO DETERMINE THE ACTUAL LOADING OF THE SEATS IN ACCIDENTS WHICH THE OCCUPANTS SURVIVED. AN EVALUATION OF THE LITERATURE DEALING WITH THE PROBLEMS OF THE LOADINGS WHICH OCCUR IN DIFFERENT TYPES OF COLLISIONS FORMED THE BASIS OF THE TEST PROGRAMME. RESULTS SHOWED THAT NON-RESTRAINED OCCUPANTS WHO COLLIDE WITH THE FRONT SEAT CAUSE AN ADDITIONAL STRESS ON THIS SEAT, WHICH TAKES PLACE IN TWO PHASES. IN THE FIRST PHASE THE OCCUPANT HITS THE SEAT WITH HIS KNEES. THIS LOADING OCCURS SIMULTANEOUSLY WITH THE LOADING BROUGHT ABOUT BY THE DECELERATED MASS OF THE SEAT. IN THE SECOND PHASE THE SEAT IS LOADED BY THE IMPACT OF THE CHEST AGAINST THE UPPER PART OF THE BACKREST. THE RESULTS OF THE STUDY LED TO A PROPOSAL FOR ADAPTING THE TEST CONDITIONS.
