IN 1960 A UNIQUE COLLECTION OF STATISTICAL DATA ON ACCIDENTS IN AUSTRIA WAS COMMENCED. SINCE 1.1.1967 A REVISED DRAFT HAS BEEN IN EXISTENCE. SINCE 1.1.1976 THE USE OF MACHINE-READ FORMS HAS REDUCED CODING TIME AND PUNCHING WORK. THE QUESTION OF SPEED RESTRICTIONS IS GIVEN SUBSTANTIALLY MORE ATTENTION. THE SECOND PART OF THE WORK DEALS WITH AN ANALYSIS OF THE EFFECTS OF GENERAL SPEED RESTRICTIONS. THE 37 SIMPLE AND 36 COMBINED ACCIDENT SITUATIONS IN THE ACCIDENT STATISTICS ARE SUMMARIZED IN 10 CATEGORIES. THREE HALF-YEARS AS PREVIOUS PERIODS (1972/73) ARE COMPARED WITH THREE HALF-YEARS AS SUBSEQUENT PERIODS (1973/74). AMONG OTHER FACTORS, THE 10 ACCIDENT SITUATIONS RESULT IN THE FOLLOWING REPRESENTATION: "COLLISIONS WITH CROSSING TRAFFIC" ARE TYPICAL LOCAL AREA ACCIDENTS WHICH OCCUR AT VERY LOW SPEEDS. "COLLISIONS WHEN OVERTAKING" ARE INFLUENCED IN A SPECIFICALLY POSITIVE WAY BY GENERAL SPEED RESTRICTIONS. "ACCIDENTS BETWEEN MERGING VEHICLES" SHOW A TOTAL INCREASE OF 4 PER CENT WHICH CAN HOWEVER BE ATTRIBUTED TO THE INCREASE AMONGST OTHER ACCIDENT PARTIES. A NEGATIVE EFFECT OF SPEED RESTRICTIONS IS SHOWN APPARENTLY ON MOTORWAYS, SINCE CAR ACCIDENTS HAVE SHOWN AN INCREASE OF A QUARTER. ON COUNTRY ROADS A REDUCTION OF THREE PER CENT WAS ESTABLISHED. "COLLISION DUE TO BRAKING" IS GENERALLY LESS COMMON WITH CARS. SPEED LIMITS AFFECT MOTOR CARS AS EXPECTED IN SITUATIONS HEADED "DEVIATION FROM THE CARRIAGEWAY".
