THE INFLUENCE OF ERRORS ON THE MEASUREMENT OF EXTERNAL NOISE-LEVELS OF PASSENGER VEHICLES

IN ACCORDANCE WITH ISO R 362 THE EXTERNAL NOISE-LEVEL OF MECHANICALLY PROPELLED VEHICLES, WHICH IS SUBJECT TO LEGAL LIMITATIONS, IS MEASURED WHILE THE VEHICLE IS DRIVING PAST AND ACCELERATING. THE ERRORS WHICH CAN OCCUR ARE ESTIMATED: POSSIBLE ERRORS IN MEASUREMENT DUE TO THE DRIVING (SPEED, POINT AT WHICH ACCELERATION COMMENCES, DEVIATIONS FROM INTENDED COURSE) AND ERRORS IN THE MEASUREMENT ITSELF (INSTRUMENTAL AND READING ERRORS, TACHOMETER ERRORS) CAN TOGETHER BE REDUCED TO ABOUT + OR - 1 DB BY MULTIPLE MEASUREMENTS. IN ADDITION TO THESE, THERE ARE SYSTEMATIC ERRORS DUE TO INACCURACY OF THE SPEEDOMETER OR TACHOMETER (INFLUENCE ABOUT + OR - 0.8 DB) AND DIFFERENCES IN THE TEST SITES (KNOWN TO AMOUNT TO AS MUCH AS 2 DB): THESE CAN BE REDUCED BY CAREFUL CALIBRATION AND COMPARATIVE MEASUREMENTS. DIFFERENT NOISE REDUCTION TECHNIQUES SHOULD ONLY BE COMPARED WHEN THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THEM SIGNIFICANTLY EXCEED THE PROBABLE ERROR IN THE MEASUREMENTS.
