QUARTZ SANDY LIMESTONES AND SANDSTONES WITH L.A. ABRASION WEAR LOSS OF 40 PERCENT OR LESS EXHIBIT GOOD RESISTANCE TO BOTH WEAR AND POLISH. CHERT AND QUARTZ EXHIBIT GENERALLY LOW POLISH STONE VALUES DUE TO LACK OF INITIAL RUGOSITY, BUT EDGES AND RESISTANCE TO WEAR ARE THEIR MAIN CONTRIBUTORS TO SKID RESISTANCE. THE BRITISH WHEEL TEST ADEQUATELY EVALUATES THE POLISHING CHARACTERISTICS OF CERTAIN AGGREGATES, BUT VALUES FROM OTHER TESTS ARE NEEDED TO EVALUATE THE WEARABILITY OF ALL AGGREGATES FOR BLENDING PURPOSES. A DETAILED PETROGRAPHIC CLASSIFICATION FOR CARBONATE ROCKS IS SUGGESTED FOR FUTURE AGGREGATE RESEARCHERS TO SUPPLEMENT AASHO AND ASTM PETROGRAPHIC PROCEDURES. /AUTHOR/
