EYE MOVEMENTS OF DRIVERS NEGOTIATING UNEXPECTED OBSTACLES AND ON CLEAR ROADS

THIS PAPER CONSIDERS BOTH THE NATURE OF THE INFORMATION TO BE HANDLED WHILE DRIVING VEHICLES AND THE STRUCTURAL/FUNCTIONAL ASPECTS OF THE INFORMATION HANDLING APPARATUS, ESPECIALLY IN REGARD TO ITS CAPACITY LIMITATIONS. A DETAILED ACCOUNT IS GIVEN OF THE RECORDING OF THE EYE-MOVEMENTS OF FIVE DRIVERS TRAVERSING A BUILDING SITE. IN ORDER TO INVESTIGATE THE RELATION BETWEEN VEHICLE SPEED AND AVERAGE EYE-FIXITY DURATION, AS WELL AS THE LATERAL DISTRIBUTION OF EYE-FIXITY DIRECTIONS WHILE DRIVING ALONG STRAIGHT STRETCHES, RECORDINGS WERE MADE OF:- EYE-FIXITY DURATION; NUMBER OF EYE-FIXATIONS IN A DEFINED STRETCH OF ROAD; DIRECTIONS OF EYE-FIXATIONS; AND VEHICLE SPEED. CONSIDERATION OF THE EYE-FIXITY SEQUENCES OF EXPERIMENTAL SUBJECTS ENABLES CONCLUSIONS TO BE DRAWN AS TO THEIR EFFECTIVENESS AND ABILITY TO ANTICIPATE. THE FASTER A SUBJECT DROVE, THE SHORTER WAS HIS AVERAGE EYE-FIXITY DURATION, BUT THIS RELATIONSHIP COULD NOT BE OBSERVED ON A NEW STRETCH OF ROAD WHICH PRESENTED SPARSE INFORMATION (PROBLEM OF THE VOLUME OF INFORMATION TO BE HANDLED UNDER PRESSURE OF TIME). AN ASYMMETRIC DISTRIBUTION OF FIXITY DIRECTIONS IN THE HORIZONTAL PLANE WAS OBSERVED (MORE FIXATIONS TO THE LEFT OF THE MEDIAN LINE). FINALLY, DIFFERENCES IN INFORMATION HANDLING CAPACITY WERE FOUND TO EXIST BETWEEN SUBJECTS, FROM WHICH IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT THE DYNAMIC INFORMATION HANDLING MECHANISM IS MORE DESERVING OF CLOSE ATTENTION THAN SIMPLY THE ACUITY OF VISION IN ITSELF.
