RESEARCH ON ROAD SURFACINGS AND TYRES IN THE DRUM TEST RIG OF THE FEDERAL INSTITUTE FOR HIGHWAY ENGINEERING

UNTERSUCHUNGEN VON STRASSENBELAEGEN UND REIFEN IM INNENTROMMELPRUEFSTAND DER BUNDESANSTALT FUER STRASSENWESEN

THE DRUM TEST RIG IN THE FEDERAL INSTITUTE FOR HIGHWAY ENGINEERING (BAST) WHICH WAS COMPLETED IN 1974 ENABLES RESEARCH TO BE CONDUCTED INTO THE INTERACTION OF ROAD SURFACING MATERIALS AND CAR TYRES. AFTER A DESCRIPTION OF THE MECHANICAL AND AIR-CONDITIONING EQUIPMENT OF THE TEST RIG THE PAPER REVIEWS THE VARIOUS FIELDS OF APPLICATION OF THE APPARATUS AND THE RESULTS ACHIEVED UP TO THE PRESENT. DURING THE IMPORTANT ABRASION TESTS ON PAVEMENT MATERIALS SAMPLES OF POURED ASPHALT SHOWED VARYING DEGREES OF WEAR WHEN SUBJECTED TO A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT PATTERNS OF CURRENTLY AVAILABLE WINTER TYRES WITH SPIKES - BUT ON AVERAGE THE WEAR WAS ONE HUNDRED TIMES GREATER THAN THE ABRASION DUE TO TYRES WITHOUT SPIKES. MEASUREMENTS OF THE TRACTIVE EFFORT SHOWED THAT ONLY WITH SUCH SPIKED TYRES WHICH CAUSE HEAVY PAVEMENT WEAR WAS IT POSSIBLE TO OBSERVE GREATER BRAKING FORCES ON THE ICED-UP PAVEMENT OF THE TEST RIG THAN WITH SUMMER TYRES OR HIGH ADHESION WINTER TYRES. FUTURE TESTS ON THE DURABILITY OF CAR TYRES UNDER PRACTICAL DRIVING AND WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE INTENDED TO CLARIFY THE VALUE OF THE PROPOSED EUROPEAN REGULATIONS FOR THE RAPID TESTING OF TYRES.
