WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE THEORY REGARDING THE ABOVE-CRITICAL BUCKLING BEHAVIOUR OF PLATES IT IS INCREASINGLY RECOGNIZED THAT THE PREVIOUS PROPORTIONING METHOD WHICH DEPENDS SOLELY ON THE CRITICAL BUCKLING STRESS SIGMA (KI) (= BRANCHED LOAD ACCORDING TO THE GEOMETRICALLY LINEARISED THEORY) NEEDS TO BE IMPROVED. ON THE ONE HAND THERE ARE LOAD CARRYING RESERVES WHICH ARE NOT UTILISED; ON THE OTHER HAND, OVER-ESTIMATION OF THE ACTIVE LOAD CARRYING BEHAVIOUR IS POSSIBLE. TESTS MADE TO SUPPORT THE PREVIOUS THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE, WHICH HAVE ALREADY BEEN PARTLY CARRIED OUT AND PUBLISHED, AND IN PARTICULAR TESTS WHICH MAY PROVIDE A NEW IMPETUS TO THE THEORY BY, FOR EXAMPLE, A MORE PRECISE UNDERSTANDING OF THE FAILURE MECHANISM OF A BUCKLED PLATE IN THE PLASTIC REGION, ARE INDISPENSABLE FOR THE PRESENT STATE OF RESEARCH INTO BUCKLING. THE FOLLOWING POINTS MUST BE OUTLINED FOR THE MOST URGENT TESTS ON UNBRACED PLATES WITH RESPECT TO THE UNSOLVED PROBLEMS: (1) THE EFFECT OF PLASTICIZATION ON THE LOADING CAPACITY IN THE ABOVE-CRITICAL REGION. (2) THE EFFECT OF THE TYPE AND SIZE OF GEOMETRIC DEFORMATIONS AND OF INTERNAL STRAINS ON THE LOADING CAPACITY. (3) THE BEHAVIOUR OF COMPRESSION-STRESSED PLATES IN SOLID WALL AND BOX GIRDERS. THE MOST IMPORTANT AIM OF THE TESTS IS TO LIMIT THE DANGEROUS RANGES OF VARIATION WHICH CANNOT BE DEFINED THEORETICALLY SINCE AN ABOVE-CRITICAL BUCKLING THEORY TAKING ACCOUNT OF THE PLASTIC MATERIAL BEHAVIOUR IS STILL IN ITS INFANCY. FURTHER PART PROGRAMMES WERE INCLUDED UNDER IRRD NUMBERS 701201, 701202. AND 701203.
