RANDOM COUNTS OF AXLE LOADS OF ROAD FREIGHT TRANSPORT AS A MEANS OF DETERMINING THE LOAD ON THE ROAD NETWORK

IN ORDER TO DETERMINE THE MILEAGE OF ROAD GOODS TRANSPORT ACCORDING TO ACTUAL AXLE LOADS AND THE PERMISSIBLE MAXIMUM WEIGHT ON THE NETWORK OF ROADS OUTSIDE BUILT-UP AREAS IN THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY (EEC STATISTICS), IT IS NECESSARY TO ESTABLISH THE RELATION BETWEEN VISUALLY PERCEPTIBLE FEATURES OF ROAD GOODS TRANSPORT VEHICLES (SILHOUETTES AND COMBINATIONS OF SILHOUETTES) AND THE DISTRIBUTION OF AXLE LOADS DEPENDING ON THE PERMISSIBLE TOTAL WEIGHT. DURING COUNTS TO DETERMINE ROAD GOODS VEHICLE MILEAGES IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE ABOVE CRITERIA IN 1970, IT WAS SHOWN THAT THERE IS PROBABLY A RELATION BETWEEN THE TWO QUANTITIES CITED. IF THIS HYPOTHESIS IS ASSUMED IT WILL BE POSSIBLE TO REDUCE THE NUMBER OF AXLE LOAD WEIGHINGS, REQUIRED WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE CENSUS DUE IN 1975, IN FAVOUR OF AXLE COUNTS. PLAN OF WORK: 1 - ESTABLISHMENT OF COUNTING POINTS AND TIMES AT WHICH A CHECK IS TO BE MADE OF THE RELATION BETWEEN ACTUAL AXLE LOAD DISTRIBUTION AND PERMISSIBLE TOTAL WEIGHT IN INDIVIDUAL COMBINATIONS OF SILHOUETTES; FOR THIS, EVALUATIONS OF ROAD GOODS TRAFFIC DETERMINED IN FEDERAL COUNTS OF 1970 AND 1973 AND OF ADDITIONAL SILHOUETTE COUNTS ARE ANTICIPATED; 2 - DETERMINATION OF THE RELATION BETWEEN ACTUAL AXLE LOAD DISTRIBUTION AND PERMISSIBLE TOTAL WEIGHT IN SILHOUETTE COMBINATIONS AT THE SELECTED POSITIONS AND TIMES; 3 - ESTABLISHMENT OF THE POSITIONS AND TIMES AT WHICH THE COUNTING OF THE SILHOUETTES AND THE WEIGHING OF THE AXLE LOADS HAVE TO CARRIED OUT IN 1975, SO THAT THE RESULTS OF THE 1975 COUNT CAN BE CLASSIFIED ACCORDING TO ORDER 1108/70 OF THE EEC COUNCIL.
