THE PROPAGATION OF ROAD TRAFFIC NOISE IN NON-BUILT-UP AREAS HAS SO FAR ONLY BEEN RESEARCHED FOR SPECIAL SITUATIONS (FOR EXAMPLE ROAD LEVEL WITH THE TERRAIN). IN PARTICULAR DATA ARE LACKING ON THE RELATION BETWEEN THE PROPAGATION AND THE TYPE OF GROUND AND LOW VEGETATION, I.E. THE AMOUNT OF GROUND ABSORPTION. IN THIS CONNECTION THE HEIGHT OF AN OBSERVER ABOVE THE TERRAIN AND THE POSITION OF THE ROAD WITH RESPECT TO THE LEVEL OF THE TERRAIN (ABOVE OR BELOW THE LEVEL OR ON LEVEL) PLAYS AN IMPORTANT PART, AND THIS WAS NOT ALWAYS CONSIDERED IN PREVIOUS STUDIES. THEREFORE SYSTEMATICALLY EXTENSIVE MEASUREMENTS ARE TO BE MADE, SOME ON THE ROAD AND SOME USING LOUD SPEAKERS. THE RESULTS, EITHER IN TABULAR FORM OR AS WORKING DIAGRAMS, ARE TO BE USED FOR THE CALCULATION OF NOISE EMISSIONS TO BE EXPECTED ON ROADS. TOGETHER WITH THE DATA OBTAINED FROM THE RESEARCH PROJECT "DEPENDENCE OF ROAD TRAFFIC NOISE ON TRAFFIC DATA AND OPERATIONAL CONDITIONS" (F.A. 03.013B73M = IRRD NO. 700142) THE WORK WILL FORM A BASIS FOR THE ADVANCE CALCULATION OF THE ENERGY-EQUIVALENT PERMANENT NOISE LEVEL ON ROADS CARRYING FREE-FLOWING TRAFFIC. THE RESULTS ARE ALSO REQUIRED AS A BASIS FOR DRAWING UP COMPUTER PROGRAMS FOR CALCULATING NOISE, AND AS A COMPARISON FOR PLANNED MODEL TESTS.
