NUCLEAR DENSITY CONTROL AND ROLLING TESTS ON ASPHALT SURFACING
THE PRESENT WORK DEALS WITH THE COMPACTION CONTROL OF BITUMINOUS SURFACINGS BY A RADIOMETRIC METHOD. ONE PURPOSE OF THE INVESTIGATION WAS TO EXAMINE THE USEFULNESS OF THE RADIOMETRIC METHOD FOR ROUTINE CONTROL OF COMPACTION, ANOTHER TO ESTIMATE ITS RELIABILITY COMPARED WITH THE PARAFFIN METHOD OF VOID CONTENT DETERMINATION. THE INSTRUMENT USED WAS THE HDM 4 DECCA HIDRODENSIMETER, AND THE INVESTIGATION WAS PERFORMED AT ROAD CONSTRUCTION SITES IN NORTHERN SWEDEN. THE RADIOMETRIC METHOD IS VERY FAST, BUT THE PROPER USE OF THE INSTRUMENT DEMANDS A FAIRLY LONG PRACTICE, AND THE RESULT IS STILL LESS RELIABLE THAN WITH THE PARAFFIN METHOD. THIS SHOULD BE COMPENSATED BY A GREAT NUMBER OF MEASUREMENTS. THE RELATION BETWEEN THE RADIOMETRIC METHOD AND THE PARAFFIN METHOD WAS EXAMINED BY MEANS OF LINEAR REGRESSION ANALYSIS. FINALLY A COMPARISON WAS MADE BETWEEN TWO SCHEDULES FOR COMPACTION WITH THREE-WHEELED ROLLER. IT WAS FOUND THAT A LATERAL DISPLACEMENT EQUAL TO THE WIDTH OF ONE REAR WHEEL BETWEEN TWO STROKES WILL RESULT IN A MORE UNIFORM COMPACTION OVER THE CROSS SECTION THAN A DISPLACEMENT EQUAL TO THE WIDTH OF HALF THE REAR WHEEL. /AUTHOR/
