CONTINUATION OF THE STUDIES ON AN EXPERIMENTAL ROAD HAVING A HEAT-INSULATING COURSE OF LIGHT ASPHALT ON THE KANANOHE- KALTENWEIDE RING ROAD

A SECTION OF ROAD 100 KM LONG HAVING A SUBSOIL INSULATING COURSE OF LIGHT ASPHALT,AND A COMPARATIVE SECTION,LIKEWISE 100 M LONG HAVING A FROST BLANKET OF GRAVEL/SAND WAS INCORPORATED INTO THE KANANOHE-KALTENWEIDE RING ROAD NO.5 IN THE AUTUMN OF 1969.DURING THE CONSTRUCTION AND DURING THE YEARS 1970 AND 1971 MEASUREMENTS WERE CARRIED OUT WHICH SERVED THE FOLLOWING PURPOSE: A) TO DETERMINE AND COMPARE THE TEMPERATURE CONDITIONS IN ALL SEASONAL CONDITIONS AT VARIOUS DEPTHS,IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO ESTABLISH THE EFFICIENCY OF THE INSULATING COURSE OVER A FAIRLY LONG PERIOD OF TIME; B) TO DETERMINE THE SUPPORTING PROPERTIES OF THE INSULATING COURSE WITH RESPECT TO THE STRUCTURAL BEHAVIOUR.THE MEASUREMENTS OF TEMPERATURE ARE BEING CARRIED OUT BY MEANS OF SELF-RECORDING RESISTANCE THERMOMETERS INSTALLED AT 6 POINTS UP TO A DEPTH OF 80 CM AND ONE METRE ABOVE THE SURFACE OF THE GROUND,AND ALSO AT 3 POINTS AT THE SIDE OF THE ROAD.THE SUPPORTING PROPERTIES ARE BEING DETERMINED BY MEANS OF PLATE BEARING TESTS ON ALL THE STRUCTURAL LAYERS AND THE SUBSOIL,BY MEANS OF STATIC SURFACE LOADING AND MEASUREMENT BY PRESSURE SENSORS INSTALLED,AND BY MEANS OF TRANSVERSE PROFILE LEVELLING.IN ORDER TO COMPLETE THE OBSERVATIONS THE PROGRAMME OF MEASUREMENTS IS TO BE EXTENDED BY 3 TO 5 YEARS.
