CORRELATION OF SEISMICALLY DETERMINED SOIL COEFFICIENTS WITH CONVENTIONALLY DETERMINED SOIL MECHANICS COEFFICIENTS
KORRELATION VON SEISMISCH ERMITTELTEN BODENKENNWERTEN MIT KONVENTIONELL BESTIMMTEN BODENMECHANISCHEN KENNWERTEN
THE COMPLETED RESEARCH PROJECT ENTITLED "USE OF REFRACTION SEISMOLOGY IN SOIL INVESTIGATIONS FOR ROAD CONSTRUCTION" HAS SHOWN THAT THERE IS A CERTAIN CORRELATION BETWEEN SEISMICALLY DETERMINED CHARACTERISTIC VALUES (SPEED OF SEISMIC WAVES AND DYNAMIC MODULUS OF STIFFNESS) AND THE DENSITY AND MODULUS OF STIFFNESS.THESE RELATIONS ARE TO BE CHECKED BY SYSTEMATIC SERIES OF TESTS AND THE CORRELATION IS TO BE EXAMINED FOR ITS STATISTICAL SIGNIFICANCE.IF THE CORRELATIONS ARE CONFIRMED,CONSIDERABLE COSTS SAVINGS CAN BE ACHIEVED IN SOIL SURVEYS.MOREOVER THE SOIL SURVEY DATA BECOME MORE COMPLETE BECAUSE THE STUDY PROCEDURE DETERMINES THE SUBSOIL LINEARLY OR OVER AN AREA AND NOT AT A POINT, SUCH AS IN THE CASE OF SOUNDING OR DRILLING.THE PLAN OF WORK IS THAT AT 5 TEST SITES,FIRST OF ALL BY MEANS OF REFRACTION SEISMOLOGY,THE LAYER STRUCTURE WILL BE DETERMINED,CLASSIFIED ACCORDING TO THE SPEED OF THE LONGITUDINAL WAVES.FROM THE SPEED THE DYNAMIC MODULUS OF STIFFNESS IS CALCULATED. BOREHOLES ARE ALSO TO BE INCORPORATED AT THE TEST SITES, AND THESE ARE TO BE USED FOR DETERMINING THE GEOLOGICAL LAYER OF THE STRUCTURE.FOR THE CORRELATION THE FOLLOWING CHARACTERISTIC VALUES ARE BEING DETERMINED ON UNDISTURBED SOIL SAMPLES: DEGREE OF COMPACTION,CONSISTENCY LIMITS, MODULUS OF STIFFNESS AND SHEAR STRENGTH.
