IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF A GENERALLY VALID,DIGITAL TERRAIN MODEL IT HAS BEEN SHOWN THAT THE USER'S DEMANDS FOR SPEED, FLEXIBILITY AND BREVITY OF THE SUITE OF PROGRAMS CAN ONLY BE MET BY A PERFECT ORGANIZATION OF DATA AND ELIMINATION OF COMPLICATED INTERPOLATION PROCEDURES.THESE VIEWPOINTS HAVE LED TO THE POINTS OF TERRAIN BEING ARRANGED IN ACCORDANCE WITH A REGULAR RECTANGULAR GRID AND TO THE USE OF LINEAR INTERPOLATION.AS RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN THE FIELD OF PHOTOGRAMMETRIC TERRAIN EVALUATION SHOW TRENDS TOWARDS EXTENSIVELY AUTOMATED METHODS OF EVALUATION WITH REGULAR GRID-SHAPED ARRANGEMENT OF THE POINTS REGISTERED,THE TERRAIN DATA ARE AVAILABLE DIRECTLY IN THE ARRANGEMENT NECESSARY FOR THE DIGITAL TERRAIN MODEL.SO THAT THE DIGITAL TERRAIN MODEL CAN BE USED INDEPENDENTLY FROM THE TYPE OF TERRAIN REGISTRATION,IT IS NECESSARY TO CONVERT THE IRREGULARLY ARRANGED POINTS OBTAINED FROM VARIOUS RECORDING PROCEDURES INTO THE GRID SHAPE.THE AIM OF THE RESEARCH PROJECT IS TO DEVELOP PRACTICAL PROGRAMS FOR THIS ON THE BASIS OF PROPOSALS MADE IN AN EARLIER PROJECT (X11,48=3.306; IRRD 30589), (INTERPOLATION OF CONTOURS,INTERPOLATION IN ACCORDANCE WITH LEAST SQUARES,KRAUS),AND THUS TO HIGHLIGHT REQUIREMENTS FOR THE GENERAL APPLICATION AND COMPREHENSIVE PRACTICAL INTRODUCTION OF THE DIGITAL TERRAIN MODEL.
