HIGHWAY EMERGENCY LIGHT CHEMILUMINESCENT FLARES

The report consists of a series of technical notes describing the development, production and evaluation for highway traffic use of a non-thermal, fluorescent light source. The chemical light EX17MODO, bright orange in color was used as the basis for a feasibility demonstration. Two thousand such lights with holders were fabricated and delivered to the NHTSA. The report contains operating instructions, preliminary fabrication data, a cost analysis which shows that fabrication costs can be less than 0.5 dollars in production quantities, also, the behavior of Chemlite when subjected to environmental conditions is described. Minor tests performed at the Naval Weapons Center for demonstrating the use of Chemlites as emergency highway lights are reported. (Author)
