HYDROGEN BRITTLENESS TESTS ON PRESTRESSING WIRES

ALGUNOS ENSAYOS DE FRAGILIZACION POR HIDROGENO SOBRE ALAMBRES PARA PRETENSADO

DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF TENSILE CORROSION TESTS ON PRESTRESSING STEEL. MEASUREMENTS WERE TAKEN OF THE CREEP OF SAMPLES PLACED IN AN AMMONIA MEDIUM WHICH RESULTS IN SUDDEN FAILURE IN A FEW HOURS. THE STEEL SAMPLES HAD BEEN SUBJECTED TO A NUMBER OF TREATMENTS: PHOSPHATE APPLICATION, WIRE DRAWING, AGEING TREATMENT AND HEAT-TENSILE STRESSES. THE RESULTS SHOWED NO RELATION BETWEEN CREEP AND THE BRITTLENESS CAUSED BY HYDROGEN; THE STRENGTH AND ELASTIC LIMIT WERE LOWERED BECAUSE OF THE AGEING TESTS, THE LATTER IMPROVING RESISTANCE TO FATIGUE; THERMO-TENSILE TREATMENTS REDUCED CREEP SOMEWHAT DEPENDING ON THE DURATION OF THE TREATMENT. THIS PAPER WAS PRESENTED AT THE 8TH NATIONAL MEETING OF THE SPANISH PRESTRESSING ASSOCIATION, NOVEMBER, 1975.
