THIS PAPER STUDIES THE MECHANICAL AND RHEOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF CONCRETE WITH A VIEW TO THEIR APPLICATION TO THE DESIGN OF STRUCTURAL UNITS SUPPORTING GIVEN LOADS IN CONDITIONS OF SAFETY, UNITS THE MATERIAL OF WHICH IS NOT AFFECTED OVER A PERIOD OF TIME. THE FACTORS WHICH INFLUENCE SHRINKAGE ARE GIVEN: (A) PROPORTION AND TYPE OF CEMENT; (B) AIR MOISTURE CONTENT; (C) AMBIENT TEMPERATURE; (D) AGE OF THE MIXTURE; (E) CURING. ALSO EXAMINED IS THE PHENOMENON OF CREEP AND ITS IMPORTANCE. THE FOLLOWING PHYSICAL PROPERTIES ARE COVERED: THERMAL EXPANSION, CONDUCTIVITY, COMPACTION, DENSITY AND WEIGHT AS WELL AS THE PERMEABILITY. RELEVANT TESTS ARE QUOTED, AND THE FACTORS WHICH AFFECT EACH OF THE PROPERTIES IN QUESTION ARE EXAMINED. AS REGARDS MECHANICAL PROPERTIES THE STUDY IS LIMITED TO COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OR CHARACTERISTIC STRENGTH AND ITS VARIATION AS A FUNCTION OF TIME. DETAILED COMMENT IS PRESENTED ON THE CEB STANDARDS.
