A THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL STUDY OF THE METHODS OF CALCULATING VARIOUS ASPECTS OF SOIL MECHANICS IS DESCRIBED. THE FIRST ASPECT INVESTIGATED IS THE DISTRIBUTION OF STRESSES IN SOIL MASSES AND SETTLEMENT CALCULATION. THE EFFECTS OF ACTIVE EARTH PRESSURE ON WALLS AND TUNNELS ARE CONSIDERED. IN THE FIELD OF SHALLOW FOUNDATIONS IN VARIOUS TYPES OF SOIL, THE CASE OF COMPENSATED FOUNDATIONS AND EXCAVATIONS FOR BRIDGE PIERS IS ANALYZED. THE DYNAMIC ASPECTS OF PILES AND THEIR SINKING IS CONSIDERED FOR DEEP FOUNDATIONS. GEOTECHNICAL DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF PAVEMENT AND RUNWAY DESIGN, SLOPE STABILITY, EARTH DAMS, AND SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF FOUNDATIONS IN THE VALLEY OF MEXICO.
