THE AUTHOR STRESSES THE FACT THAT RIGID PAVEMENTS DO NOT NEED A THICK SUBBASE BUT AN EVEN ONE. THE MAIN REASON FOR USING SUBBASES IS TO PREVENT "PUMPING" OF FINE SOIL. NUMEROUS TYPES OF SAND AND GRAVEL HAVE SHOWN THAT THEY CAN BE USED IN SUBBASES, WITH OR WITHOUT STABILIZATION. MATERIAL EVENNESS IS OF PRIMORDIAL IMPORTANCE. IT IS RECALLED THAT THE THICKNESSES MOSTLY UTILIZED IN URBAN ROADS AND STREETS TO PREVENT PUMPING ARE 10 AND 15 CMS. THE USE OF THICKER UNSTABILIZED LAYERS HAS NO TECHNICAL OR ECONOMIC JUSTIFICATION. THE AUTHOR DRAWS ATTENTION TO THE FACT THAT CEMENT-STABILIZED SUBBASES HAVE ECONOMIC AND STRUCTURAL ADVANTAGES OVER NON-STABILIZED LAYERS FOR ROADS CARRYING HEAVY TRAFFIC.
