SOLVENT ANALYSIS AND SPECIFICATIONS UTILIZING GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY

A TEST METHOD FOR USING GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY TO ANALYZE LIQUIDS IS ESTABLISHED AND TENTATIVE SPECIFICATIONS FOR EIGHT SOLVENTS ARE PROPOSED. THOUGH CHARACTERISTICS AND RESPONSE FACTORS OF GAS CHROMATOGRAPHS VARY FROM INSTRUMENT TO INSTRUMENT, FROM LABORATORY TO LABORATORY, AND WITH AGE; KOVATS RETENTION INDICIES PROVIDE A MEANS OF MINIMIZING THE EFFECT SOME VARIATIONS HAVE ON THE ANALYSIS RESULTS. BY USING SELECTIVE CHROMATOGRAPHIC CONDITIONS AND KOVATS RETENTION INDICIES, MOST SOLVENTS CAN BE IDENTIFIED AND DESCRIBED QUALITATIVELY AND QUANTITATIVELY. EXPERIENCE AND DATA GAINED THROUGH ROUTINE USE OF THIS TEST PROCEDURE SHOULD FACILITATE EXPANSION TO INCLUDE NUMEROUS OTHER LIQUIDS USED BY THE HIGHWAY INDUSTRY. /AUTHOR/
