STRUCTURAL STUDY OF THE SURFACING OF THE MERCEDES AIRPORT

ESTUDIO DE PAQUETE ESTRUCTURAL DE AEROPUERTO DE MERCEDES

THE PAPER CONCERNS THE STUDY OF THE SOIL UNDERLYING THE CONSOLIDATED BASE OF A ROAD SURFACING. SOIL CHARACTERISTICS ARE DETERMINED BY MEANS OF BOREHOLES AND SITE INVESTIGATION AND THE DATA FROM LABORATORY TESTS ARE DISCUSSED. THE FOUR SOLUTIONS ANALYSED ARE THE FOLLOWING: (1) STUDY OF THE ROADBASE STABILISED WITH LIME. THE OPTIMUM QUANTITY OF LIME TO BE UTILISED IS GIVEN, AND IT APPEARS TO BE UNECONOMIC; (2) STUDY OF THE PARTLY STABILISED PEBBLE ROADBASE, WHICH PROVIDES A CONSIDERABLE THICKNESS FOR A MINIMUM DESIGN LOAD OF 12 T PER WHEEL; IN SPITE OF THAT, IT IS MORE ECONOMIC THAN THE PRECEDING SOLUTION. THE QUANTITIES OF PEBBLES AND COHESIVE SOIL TO BE USED ARE GIVEN, AS WELL AS THE OPTIMUM MIX. A COMPARATIVE ECONOMIC STUDY OF THE TWO SOLUTIONS IS CARRIED OUT; (3) STUDY OF THE ROADBASE STABILISED TO "STANDARD" TYPE WITH 70% PEBBLES AND 30% COHESIVE SOIL. THE LABORATORY TESTS AND DESIGN MIX ARE DISCUSSED; (4) FINALLY A FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT TEST IS DISCUSSED FOR A MAXIMUM LOAD OF 12000 KG PER WHEEL. THE SOLUTION ADOPTED FOR THE ROADBASE IS STANDARD TYPE STABILISATION AND FOR THE BASE LAYER THE PARTIAL STABILISATION OF PEBBLES IS CARRIED OUT IN TWO LAYERS WITH A RESPECTIVE THICKNESS OF 125 MM.
