CLASSIFYING REINFORCING BARS FOR BOND STRENGTH

TESTS RESULTS ARE PRESENTED OF SPECIMENTS OF NINE TYPES OF REINFORCING BARS. A SIMPLE TEST METHOD WAS NEEDED THAT COULD BE USED TO COMPARE AND CLASSIFY THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF DEFORMED BAR REINFORCEMENT CURRENTLY USED FOR BOND STRENGTH. IT WAS FOUND THAT THE TESTS FELL INTO TWO GROUPS: PULL-OUT TYPE AND TRANSFER TYPE; THE FORMER REFLECTING INTERFERENCE OR ANCHORAGE BOND AND THE LATTER TRUE ADHESION BOND. ADHESION BOND DIFFERED LITTLE FOR THE WIDE RANGE OF BARS TESTED. BUT ANCHORAGE BOND DIFFERED CONSIDERABLY, DEPENDING UPON THE DEGREE OF SURFACE DEFORMATION, WHILE PLAIN ROUND, SQUARE TWISTED AND RIBBED BARS FELL INTO THREE DISTINCT CATEGORIES. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT THE PRESENT COMPARATIVE TEST OF BRITISH STANDARD CODE OF PRACTICE 114:1957 FOR BOND AND ANCHORAGE COULD BE REPLACED BY A SIMPLE NEW TEST WHICH MEASURES THE INTRINSIC PERFORMANCE OF A BAR IN ANCHORAGE. /TRRL/
