GDOT RESEARCH PROJECT NO. 7201 FINAL REPORT DETERMINATION OF THE FEASIBILITY OF USING SOUTHERN PINE VENEER LOG CORES AS POSTS FOR FENCING HIGHWAY PROJECTS

THIS STUDY WAS CONDUCTED FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION OF GEORGIA TO EVALUATE SOUTHERN PINE VENEER LOG CORES USED FOR HIGHWAY FENCING. THE OBJECTIVES WERE TO 1. DETERMINE SERVICEABILITY, RESIDUAL PRESERVATIVE RETENTION AND PENETRATION OF POSTS 3 TO 7 YEARS OLD. 2. STUDY EFFECTS OF CAPS IN PREVENTING POST TOP DETERIORATION FROM WEATHERING AND DECAY. 3. DETERMINE EFFECTS OF AIR SEASONING ON CHECKING, PRESERVATIVE RETENTION AND PENETRATION COMPARED WITH STEAM-VACUUM CONDITIONING. 4. PROVIDE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FUTURE USE OF POSTS AND CAPS, AND SPECIFICATION CHANGES. POSTS IN SIX INTERSTATE PROJECTS WERE EXAMINED AND SOUNDED, AND TESTED FOR RESIDUAL PRESERVATIVE RETENTION AND PENETRATION. STEAM-VACUUM CONDITIONED AND AIR SEASONED POSTS WERE TREATED AND TESTED AT THE TREATING PLANT. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS WERE THAT 1. FEW POSTS DECAYED, BUT GENERALLY SATISFACTORY. CONTINUE USE OF POSTS. 2. REQUIRED 0.50 INCH SAPWOOD NOT PRACTICAL. MINIMUM 0.25 INCH PENETRATION IN HEARTWOOD FACES ND SHOULD BE REQUIRED. 3. PRESERVATIVE RETENTION TOO LOW. INCREASE CREOSOTE TO 8 POUNDS AND PENTACHLORPHENOL TO 0.40 POUND BY ASSAY. 4. AIR SEASONING DID NOT APPRECIABLY INCREASE PRESERVATIVE PENETRATION AND RETENTION. IT IS NOT RECOMMENDED. 5. CAPPED TOPS WERE NOT WEATHERED OR DECAYED. NO DECAY DETECTED IN UNCAPPED SAPLING POSTS 12 YEARS OLD. USE OF CAPS NOT RECOMMENDED.
