STUDY OF THE FATIGUE CHARACTERISTICS OF HIGH-STRENGTH STEEL WELDED JOINTS

ETUDE DES CARACTERISTIQUES DE FATIGUE DE JOINTS SOUDES EN ACIERS A HAUTE RESISTANCE

THIS COMMUNICATION WAS PRESENTED AT THE "CONFERENCE ON THE MECHANICAL BEHAVIOUR OF WELDED STRUCTURES", IN MARSEILLE, 11TH - 12TH MARCH 1976. STEELS WITH A HIGH ELASTIC LIMIT (RE GREATER THAN 50 DAN/MM2) ARE INCREASINGLY USED IN STEEL CONSTRUCTION. RELATIVELY LITTLE DATA RELATING TO FATIGUE IN SUCH STEEL ARE AVAILABLE, AND THE VALUES AVAILABLE ARE NOT ALWAYS CONSISTENT. IN RESPONSE TO NUMEROUS DEMANDS, THE AUTHORS HAVE CARRIED OUT A STUDY OF THE FATIGUE STRENGTH OF THE MATERIALS WITH AN ELASTIC LIMIT VARYING BETWEEN 38 DAN/MM2 AND 75 DAN/MM2 AND OF WELDED JOINTS IN THESE MATERIALS. THIS REPORT PRESENTS THE RESULTS OF FATIGUE TESTS AND MEASUREMENTS OF THE RATE OF CRACKING FOR BOTH METALS AND WELDED JOINTS.
