STUDY OF THE TENSILE STRENGTH, CRACKING UNDER FATIGUE AND CRACKING FROM STRESS CORROSION OF HIGH STRENGTH STEELS BY MEANS OF FAILURE MECHANICS

ETUDE, PAR LA MECANIQUE DE LA RUPTURE, DE LA TENACITE, DE LA FISSURATION PAR FATIGUE ET DE LA FISSURATION PAR CORROSION SOUS CONTRAINTE D'ACIERS A HAUTE RESISTANCE

THIS COMMUNICATION WAS PRESENTED AT THE 14TH CONFERENCE ON SPECIAL STEELS, LUXEMBOURG 29TH - 30TH MAY 1975. IT DEALS WITH FOUR TYPES OF STEEL: TYPES 35 NCD 16, 40 CDV 20, MARAGING AND 14 - 4PH. FOR DIFFERENT TYPES OF THERMAL TREATMENT (RE = 1500 TO 2000 DAN), THE FOLLOWING FACTORS WERE MEASURED: TENSILE STRENGTH, RATE OF CRACKING UNDER FATIGUE, THRESHOLD OF NO-CRACKING, THE RATE OF CRACKING UNDER STRESS CORROSION, AND THE FACTOR OF STRESS INTENSITY CORRESPONDING TO THE FAILURE FOLLOWING APPLICATION OF STRESS IN A CORROSIVE MEDIUM FOR 1000 HOURS.
